Foreign Language Proficiency Scale

In order to properly gauge a candidate or employee’s proficiency in a foreign language, the CIA uses the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.

This scale runs from zero to five: zero meaning no practical ability to use the language, and five meaning a person possesses an advanced mastery of the language.

Before you apply for a position where your language skills will be used, we encourage you to watch the videos below to get a better idea where you fall on the ILR scale.
