Counterterrorism analysts assess the leadership, motivations, capabilities, plans, and intentions of foreign terrorist groups and their state and non-state sponsors. Their key mission is to identify specific threats, warn of and preempt attacks, disrupt their networks, and eventually defeat terrorist organizations. Counterterrorism analysts analyze a variety of information to gain a comprehensive understanding of a complex analytic issue and produce a range of written intelligence products. Counterterrorism analysts also brief US policymakers and foreign partners, military officials, and intelligence and law enforcement agencies. They provide analytic support to law enforcement and other US government organizations, and highlight targeting opportunities to support intelligence operations designed to counter terrorism. Agency analysts are encouraged to maintain and broaden their professional ties through academic study, contacts, and attendance at professional meetings. They may also choose to pursue additional studies in fields relevant to their areas of responsibility. Opportunities exist for foreign travel, language training, analytic and management training, and assignments in other offices in the Agency and throughout the US Government.
Minimum requirements include a bachelor's or master's degree in international affairs, national security studies or related subjects, preferably accompanied by specific regional expertise. A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale is required. Competitive candidates typically will have higher GPAs, relevant experience, and strong verbal presentation and writing skills, including the demonstrated ability to write clear and concise text. Excellent analytical ability, solid interpersonal skills, the capacity to think clearly and creatively, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are also required. Foreign language proficiency and foreign area knowledge gained through study, travel or work abroad is desired.
