The Central Intelligence Agency's Directorate of Intelligence is looking for talented cartographers with excellent skills in interactive multimedia. You will produce thematic maps that contribute to complex intelligence analysis for senior policymakers, including the President of the United States. Cartographers with interactive multimedia emphasis produce maps for both web and mobile environments, so demonstrated interest in new technology is required. Applicant should have experience in a programming language such as Java, C#, C++, Visual Basic, or PHP. Some experience in Adobe Flash and authoring in AS3 is desirable. You will be responsible for all aspects of production including: map design, using GIS software, and programming interactivity. Opportunities exist to participate in internal training as well as external training, workshops, and conferences.
Candidates work as part of interdisciplinary teams managing multiple interactive projects under minimal supervision. Cartographers work with their customers to define project requirements and provide advice on processes and procedures for optimal visual presentation. Cartographers are expected to develop sufficient geographic expertise to provide substantive input into the final map product, including geographic features, Board on Geographic Names (BGN) rulings, key issues, and recent developments.
Minimum requirements include a BA, BS, MA or MS, in cartography, geography, geospatial information systems, or similarly related discipline, with an emphasis in thematic cartography. A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4-point scale is required. A portfolio of five or more cartographic products will be requested from applicants considered for this position.
Competitive candidates should have knowledge of cartographic design principles including color and symbology theory, map projections, thematic and statistical mapping, topographic and reference mapping, display hierarchies, typography, and data generation. Other requirements include knowledge of GIS principles including data types; data layers; basic geographic, analytic, and statistical functions; geographic coordinate systems; and data formatting. Candidates must have the ability to collect, analyze, and integrate geographic and substantive data into an effectively designed cartographic product. Additionally, candidates should be proficient in the use of, or be rapidly gaining expertise with the software, hardware, and platforms necessary for cartographic, graphic, and web production, such as some of the following: ESRI ArcView GIS, ESRI ArcGIS, Avenza MAPublisher, Intergraph GeoMedia Pro, Microsoft Office, Adobe software such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Flash, and Acrobat. Experience with the Adobe suite of software is strongly desired.
