As a Fire Protection Engineer (FPE) for the CIA, you will be part of a select cadre of professionals enabling the Agency’s global intelligence mission through the protection of people, facilities, and systems. Our engineers serve in two concurrent roles: Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) ensuring compliance with recognized building, fire, and life safety codes; and the owner’s representative Subject Matter Expert (SME) advancing innovative, cost-effective and mission-supportive fire protection solutions. Responsibilities of an Agency Fire Protection Engineer include:

  • Review planning, programming, architectural and engineering designs, specifications, and other technical documents for proposed construction activities to validate compliance with applicable codes and standards and to identify optimal fire protection solutions
  • Conduct inspections of new construction and renovations to validate compliance of fire protection/life safety aspects
  • Witness acceptance testing and commissioning of fire protection systems and equipment to validate functional performance
  • Conduct comprehensive fire safety audits, inspections, and investigations of Agency locations & operations
  • Design, install, test, troubleshoot, and repair fire protection systems
  • Investigate fire and explosion events to determine cause, origin, and contributing factors
  • Assist in emergency planning, preparedness, and exercises

The CIA hires Fire Protection Engineers at various career progression levels from entry to senior level. Entry-level personnel will work under the close guidance and supervision of experienced and licensed senior Fire Protection Engineers. More experienced engineers will manage program areas as required.

This position requires a commitment to serve wherever mission needs are located. You must maintain an ongoing readiness to travel and relocate to meet short and long-term organizational requirements both domestically and overseas - including hardship locations.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited university program in one of the following fields:
    • Fire Protection Engineering
    • Fire Protection Engineering Technology
    • Other Engineering discipline with demonstrated work experience in the Fire Protection Engineering field
  • GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4-point scale is preferred, but exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances
  • Demonstrated experience with the International Building Code and the NFPA Codes and Standards, to include but not limited to NFPA 1, 13, 70, 72, 75 and 101
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service
Desired Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the fire protection aspects of facility design, construction, and commissioning; to include egress, passive fire protection, fire alarm, and fire suppression
  • Demonstrated experience in architectural, civil, structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines to evaluate and critique coordinated integration of fire protection concepts into large facility projects
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in any U.S. state, commonwealth, or district; having passed the fire protection engineering written examination administered by the NCEES
  • Hands-on experience with installation, troubleshooting, repair of fire alarm or fire suppression systems, or an equivalent general mechanical and electrical technical aptitude
  • Completed the manufacturer factory training for a large-scale networked fire alarm product line and possess current manufacturer certification to design and program such equipment and systems
