Introduction
------------

The main idea behind this program is to make up for a shortfall in the Windows XP file search facility that prevents users from searching all file types. Windows XP requires that a file type be registered in order for it to be included in searches. This program includes some of the functionality of Windows XP search but it will not exclude any file types unless they are specified by the user. Search XP can add itself to the Explorer context menu so that it will appear when you right-click on folders in Windows. The program allows users to search for a word or phrase in all or some of the files in a folder. Wildcards or specific strings can be used to limit which filenames are searched and the program can be made to search in all the sub-folders of a particular folder.

Installation
------------

Run install.exe. This will add Search XP to the Explorer context menu that appears when you right click on files

Usage
-----

After installing the program, an option called Search XP should be added to the menu that appears when you right click on folders in Explorer. If you click on Search XP in this menu the program should run (Search XP can be run by double clicking on searchxp.exe).
Upon running Search XP you should be presented with a window from which you can select search options. The 'folder to search in' field will alreay have been filled in if Search XP was run from explorer but you can change it anyway. If 'all or part of file name' contains a string then only filenames which include the string will be searched. If the field is empty then all filenames will be searched. The 'all or part of file name' field may contain wildcards. The 'word or phrase in file' field allows you to specify a string that files must contain in order to be displayed. If this field is empty then all files matching the criteria in the top two fields will be displayed in the list box.
When the 'search in sub-folders' option is checked, the program will search recursively in all the sub-folders of the selected folder. Checking the 'case sensitive' option will make SearchXP ignore the case (upper/lower) of letters when searching for the 'word or phrase in file' string. Files can be opened with the associated program (open) or with notepad (edit). To open one of the files returned by a search, click on the filename to select it and then click on 'open' or 'edit'.

Uninstallation
--------------

Run uninstall.exe. This will remove Search XP from the Explorer context menu.
