Comments on: Linda McGibney: We Who Prospered Should Pay Tax
Counters Ben Stein's Claim That Ending Tax Cut Is "Punishment" of Well-Off, Says It's Patriotic for Rich to Pay More
- "And I am not talking about charity; this isn't charity. " A few facts: - 47% of Americans pay no income tax (google it) - Upper 50% of income taxpayers pay 97% of income tax - Upper 5% pay 57% of income taxes So, when people whine that the "rich" aren't paying their fair share, it is nothing short of hypocrisy.

- Very odd that CBS Sunday Morning NEVER has a conservative give a response a week later to all the liberal comments of Nancy Giles.Time to stop watching CBS Sunday Morning. Too leftist, Marxist for us!

- Are you serious? Really? Have you looked at the articles listed? Most of them are Tea Party and are a reasonable. What do you want? You want to say that economy is all Obama's fault yet the Tea Party then says that government should stay out. Cripe! Come on people.
- Stop watching that Stargate show on Sy-Fi. Oh wait, nobody watches it already! You know, I like CBS Sunday morning. It has been part of the Sunday morning routine for years, with the calming voice of Mr. Osgood and Mr. Kuralt before. And while all the other morning programs where blasting away with politicts (which is fine for those who enjoy), I took refuge in CBS Sunday Morning and its mimimal political broadcast segments. Are they going to let us all down now? There are 187 other channels on my tv......hmmm........
- Bravo. I am with you, Linda. My taxes are killer as well but the truth is I do believe those of us who make more should pay more. How anyone could watch the segment on the new normal and still disagree with you is beyond me. I guess they are so hypnotized by Fox News that they will continue voting against their own best interests and support Wall street creating no value for the economy yet still feeding on the economy's life blood.

- The plain truth is: -I have a right as an American to work hard, invest smartly, and/or just become lucky and become as wealthy as possible. -I have a right as an American to give every cent that I have to anyone who may need help - or to keep every cent I make, excluding the high amount that I am already required to pay as taxes. -I may, and do, choose to contribute to a variety of charities, and yes, I get to choose which charities. (I know that fact causes pain to Ms. McGibney). -I may also choose to pay the Federal Government MORE that my required income tax. Ms. McGibney, please tell us how much more each year you choose to pay. What Ms.McGibney's soliloquy is all about is power. Not compassion, not charity, not wealth, but power. Power to force me to pay more taxes. Power to take away that for which I work, save, invest, and keep to take care of my family. Power to take what I plan to pass along to my children and grandchildren. Power to force me to lose even more of my money to taxes. Ms.McGibney, it is fair for you to decide what to do with your money, it is not fair for you to decide what others should have to do with theirs. While you freely call someone else greedy, remember that there is nothing more disgusting that the greed you have - the greed for power and to take what rightfully belongs to other people. You should be ashamed. And by the way - I am a HAVE NOT.

- What kind of power do people with no money have? Oh that's right, none at all. Maybe it's time those with power start thinking about those without...oh but that's right, you MIGHT be rich someday, so keep working hard for those that are working hard to keep you poor and powerless. Strong work.
- Do you know what your taxes go to fund. Mostly military, federal governent resource management, and retirements. Very, very little is actually what you would term as wellfare. Look it up.
- People with no money have the power to vote. The power to become educated and make a living for themselves. Did you read what I wrote at all? You reinforce my point that Ms. McGibney and all those who choose to help 'the poor' already have the power to do so, as much as they like. A word for you - ENVY -the resentful or unhappy feeling of wanting somebody else's success, good fortune, qualities, or possessions - more precisely, wanting someone who have something that you do not, to lose that which they have. Envy is listed as one of those 7 deadly sins. You and I will be all right without Robin Hood..I promise.
- I fully agree. As for what power people without money have, the answer is the same as most of those with it: none. Power comes with far more money than Ben Stein or Ms. McGibney have and they (and we) have the same right to our opinions. If you want power over your own life, don't vote for Democrats or Republicans. They are two sides of the same coin. Neither is in favor of smaller government (and I include unnecessary defense and resource management along with foreign aid and entitlement spending). There are enormous government programs (education, for one) that would better be left in the hands of the States. Vote Libertarian if you want more control over your own life and money. Like you, I donate money to the charities I choose to support, but I am also forced to support charities I do not want to. We live in a flipflopping socialist country -- under Bush II it was National Socialism and now we're swinging to Marxist-Socialism. Neither is going to work and soon we'll all pay the price. Buy gold and silver. Nothing else is going to be worth much.
- Voting is only a power when the vote is fair. With 2 of the 403 billionaires in America funding 91% of the Tea Party, the playing field is a little more than skewed. The poor need more people like Linda who have the arena to speak for them because they have money/power, not less.
- Thank you for a voice of reason in this crazy political climate. These taxes will not hurt the uppercrust's lifestyle and without them the retooling and retraining that has to take place for our middle class workers can't happen. Let Ben try to learn a new skill and pay for child care on $9/hr. Or maybe he wants to keep the kids.

- Linda said exactly what I was thinking last Sunday. I could not believe the myopic ramblings of Ben. Ben is truly sheltered by ideology . Ben is wealthy, in large part, because of a system that has allowed him to be paid for his talent. And I, once poor now rich, feel this everyday. Taxes are not a joy, but a duty. Our country is in turmoil, and this is not the time for the rich to gripe.

- Linda McGibney...What a breath of fresh air! It is so refreshing to hear that there are those among the wealthy who have a true sense of justice and indeed conscience. It's not something one hears these days. Thankyou Linda McGibney,You've given voice to some important and greatly understated social American values. If only there were more like-minded accomplished people like yourself who could be so candid as to admit there is room in our capitalistic society for a socially responsible conscience too!

- I am in the next generation down from you looking at Bureaucrats who have set themselves up at the expense of all of us. Have you looked at the Federal Congressional Retirement programs? It is criminal, considering what the rest of us have for a nest egg!!! I know you remember "I'm not a crook"-Nixon who set the pace for the elected to fund themselves thru using laws they enact to further their own backsides. They are not against doing their work with other people's money. I agree with you IF we lived in a country where we could ?trust? our elected officials. Unfortunately that is not the U.S.A. these days where getting elected gives you an almost instant guaranteed retirement and access to power. Look the California City of Bell for an example of bureaucratic crooks in action. All government participation in take-over of private business activities should be illegal. I always ran my business with the fear of bankruptcy as a motivator not to fail. Those rules are no longer being enforced equally. A country bent on forgiving Illegal immigration? It is illegal! Our country's retirement resources will used up giving people of entitlement my resources so that when I get to retirement age not much if anything will be left. Why? All generations in our country have prepared to little and asked for far too much of Government for retirement comfort. Too many have failed to save and prepare for retirement independent of government guarantees. It is a changed world changing daily leaving us all behind to pay tax upon tax upon tax. Go to a thrift shop and ask yourself how many times a product can be taxed? It is endless until no one wants it any longer and then you have to pay the landfill. How can a $27,000.00 house built in 1975 be appraised and taxed at $270,000.00 today? IMPOSSIBLE, considering my wage growth is a fraction of real estate growth except that it is REALITY. We need a new breed of politician who can right this sinking ship. Until we get there the voters only hope is to throw them out and try a new crop until government fears the people who demand freedom. We are all Taxed Enough Already!!! Vote for someone else, it can?t get worse. Thanks for reading my views.

- I'm assuming your solution is to elect Tea Party candidates who are legislatively identical to GOP 1994-2006. Great plan, look how good that turned out for you!
- TOO BAD THEY DIDN'T STICK TO THAT EARLIER PLAN....DEMOCRATS (LIBERALS, SOCIALISTS, COMMUNISTS, ANARCHISTS) GOT IN THE WAY.
- Bravo, Linda McGibney, for stating my point of view so precisely and so eloquently! Ben Stein's whine was an embarrassment, and a misrepresentation of the position of those of us fortunate enough to be among the "haves" (and believe me, I am not even close to being in your salary league, but I do have a secure roof over my head and know where my next meal is coming from). I am very much heartened to hear him so publicly rebuked for his selfishness. Thank you!!!

- I'm sure Spin Doctor Axelrod immediately rustled up a redistributionist (ie Marxist) from the entertainment industry to counter Ben Stein's common sense opinion. Obama would be happiest if everyone in the country made 40,000 a year. America isn't a pie to be equally divided, let the hard workers and innovators make a larger pie to benefit everyone. We shouldn't bring everyone down to the same mediocrity with no incentive to hire, invest and form businesses. And, I am in the 15% tax bracket, striving to make more than 250,000 someday. Let Linda McGibney write huge voluntary checks to the government, since the government spends money so efficiently and wisely..

- Define Marxist. I dare you. You can use the dictionary, that's not cheating. And then I want you to reference the actions of Axelrod and Obama that fit this definition. With sources. I'll wait.
- MARXIST.....BIG BUSINESS=EVIL......WEALTHY=MUST HAVE BEEN CROOKS....DISCREATIONARY SPENDING=NEGATIVELY IMPACTS THE PLANET....WHO CAN SPEND WEALTH THE BEST=GOVERNMENT.....INDIVIDUALISM=INNEFECTIVE,INNEFICIENT,UNFAIR.
