Ethics hearing dates set for Waters, Rangel

A House ethics panel has set hearing dates for Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York and Rep. Maxine Waters of California to address charges against the two longtime Democratic lawmakers.

Rangel's adjudicatory hearing will begin on Monday, Nov. 15, the committee announced in a statement. Waters' hearing is set to begin Monday, Nov. 29.

Last week, all five Republicans on the 10 member committee made a rare formal demand that the hearings be held before the midterm elections.

In the statement announcing the hearings, committee chair Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., said the minority's public request was made "in contrast to their prior requests and ongoing discussions" with the majority, which are kept private as a rule.

Rangel is charged with violating 13 House rules, including allegations that he solicited donations using official letterhead to raise funds for an educational center bearing his name. Waters is accused of giving special help to a bank in which her husband held stock.

The "Demo" team will stoop to new lows to protect their crooked friends. Mobsters and for money law enforcement....all the same.

Of course they won't. Pelosi's promise of cleaning up corruption was a blatent lie. They spent more than Bush did in 2 years than Bush spent in 8. That's no lie. Rangel who cheated on his taxes, is in the position to create tax laws. GO FIGURE. Then they wait until after the election to investigate the ethics charges. They did the same with the tax cuts. These liberals are NOT looking out for the best interests of the people. They allow corruption and criminal activity. There has been no accountability in the housing meltdown. The candidate in California who is opposing Meg Whitman, called her a "whore." They also harrass her about hiring an illegal immigrant as a nanny. For one thing the nanny was FIRED for it well before this campaign. She was probably a great worker! But it was the law. Now maybe that law should be changed because I don't care if someone is a nanny. A 16year old can be a nanny and I wouldn't care if anyone paid taxes. Unless there were over 5 employees. This is like mowing someones lawn or shoveling snow. Give it a break. Not to mention that it is illegal to inquire about immigration status. If they have their documents, which MEG WHITMAN had, then they can't dig deeper.

No need to rush Rangel's hearing. He's going to be around for at least 2 more years, since the fine, brilliant folks in Harlem are going to re-elect him.

They also look for the possibility that Waters and Rangle will be out of office by then so won't have to worry about it. Any one know if the these hearings have any authority over those voted out of office before the hearings happen?

      #2.1 - Fri Oct 8, 2010 5:21 AM EDT

Yes, they carry the full force of law and can lead to a federal indictment as well as jail time. William Jefferson was tried and censured after he was voted out of office for taking bribes.

Neither Maxine Waters nor Charlie Rangel have anything to fear with respect to being voted out of office, they are both in safe Democrat districts.

However, I think both Democrats and Republicans, along with some aides, are on the Congressional Ethics Committee's investigation list. There are approximately 30 Congressional Representatives, in addition to an undisclosed number of aides, on that list which will not be released by the Ethics Committee.

How convenient to hold ethics hearing after the election. If they by the grace of God would happen to lose their protected seats then the hearings would be meaningless because they'd be going out soon anyway. And if they win as is almost certain then the hearings will just be a charade culminating in some harmless slap on the wrist. The Demagogues are pros when it comes to playing political games to protect their crooked brethren.

The fact that Rangel has 4 rent controlled apartments are bit of a problem. Each year he has to sign a sworn statement that each is his primary residence. How can that be? If he signed such a statement, he is guilty of more than just ethics charges. He is guilty of perjury. So, he can be prosecuted in NY if he loses his bid for re-election.

WOuld be neat if Rangle could be charged in court since he did break the law as well as perjured himself but then the left ( and in some cases the right too) has already a history of ignoring perjury ( look at Clinton) . Would not be surprised if the ethics stuff went away completely if these two are re-elected

It has happened before. Clinton was found guilty of perjury while in office. In a hearing after he left office, he was again found guilty and forced to surrender his law license. I don't see the democrat controlled state of NY going after him, and Bloomberg, the mayor of New York city and primary jurisdiction of the offense, is nothing more than a democrat puppet.

Rangel used office stamps and office paper for personal use, How unethical! lol Whatever happened to the charges of not paying taxes on $0 income from subletting his rental??

Water's husband hadn't owned any stock in the bank (one of 100 in the deal) for years before she tried to help them survive Bush's economic disaster, Why is this even still an issue??

I believe in the private sector that is considered stealing and employees can and are fired for doing just that. So, you think its ok to use company assets for personal use. Go ask your boss what he thinks about that. I have had to fire employees in the past for stealing office supplies. But I guess since Rangels office supplies are supplied and paid for by our tax money, you're fine with him doing that. I mean after all, he needed it and couldn't afford to buy his own!

They may be after the election, but at least Democrats actually bother to hold their members accountable. When Republicans were in power, they wouldn't even INVESTIGATE other Republicans, much less "set a date for a hearing"! Back then it was "sweep it all under the rug - anything goes!"

And then these dopes have the audacity to ask for the Democrats to hold the hearings before the elections? Yeah, nice try! "Let's not inject politics into this" would be what Republicans used to say. Try a dose of the same medicine, ya dopes of nope!

Go ahead make meaningless smart remarks without substance the politicians who feel entitled to jobs and corrupt practices are counting on you to be clever and take sides. FireAntMan - the proof is in the article above: The Democrats WILL be holding hearings. Please name ONE ethics hearing the Republicans held...? None? That's what I thought!

Nice try, but you and Jerry both lose on this point - the Dem's said they would "Drain the swamp" and guess what? They had investigations, they're going to have hearings. What did the Republicans do when they were in charge of the swamp, hmmm? NOTHING!

and while I am not a clinton fan, you have to admit, he did define considerations for having sex. I'm certain that admission aided others in their lives. Heck, it may even have helped those homo Repubs you talk about.

These two people need to go. While I am sure they are not the only ones, our country is in enough trouble without having people with very questionable ethics in high places. The swamp needs to be drained.

What was I saying all the time? That the DINOsaurs are buried in the swamp. It needs to be drained.

Chairwoman Loftgren, you had time before the election to bring in Stephen Colbert in to make a mockery of our government, but you could not address the ethics (and possible criminality) of two of your party members before the elections? You seem to have as little regard for ethics, law and the rule of law as Charlie and Maxine. They should investigate you or you should resign. Your conduct is unacceptable. The nature of you character is clear.

Thle DoJ should get involved and push for investigtions of all Rep. I just wish our Pres would get Blago as his new Chief of Staff. Give him the remaining $$ of the stimalus and he will get the votes we need to get the Gov. running again. Obama / Blago 2012.
