Intelligence Today and Tomorrow

Why Spy Now?
The Psychology of Leaking and Espionage in the Digital Age

Dr. Ursula M. Wilder

In this article, CIA clinical psychologist Dr. Ursula Wilder brings up to date analysis of the psychological drivers of espionage contained in her 2003 Studies article entitled “The Psychology of Espionage.” The update, which also addresses leaking of intelligence, now takes into account the effects of the revolution in information technology that we are living in and the phenomenon of large-scale intentional leaking of material. The article contains multiple digital cross references to material in the 2003 article. Accordingly, this article and “The Psychology of Espionage” have been uploaded as a single PDF.
