The Work of a Nation
A Message from Director John O. Brennan
The women and men of the Central Intelligence Agency are hard at work—worldwide, 24 hours a day, every day—always on the lookout for potential foreign threats. Our officers serve with selfless dedication in all of our core disciplines: intelligence collection, all-source analysis, science and technology, and worldwide logistical support.
CIA provides the President and senior US government officials vital insight that helps inform the foreign policymaking process. When necessary, and at the direction of the President, CIA officers take action overseas to advance the security and interests of the American people. In the words of our Agency mission statement: “We accomplish what others cannot accomplish and go where others cannot go.”
We take pride in the Agency’s reputation as a learning institution, one that draws on the lessons of the past to thrive amid today’s challenges and plan smartly for tomorrow’s. We value diversity and inclusion among our employees, and we seek a workforce that reflects America’s enormous pool of talent. That variety of backgrounds and skills is key to our continued success, and I feel privileged to lead such an extraordinary group of women and men.
This publication offers an overview of CIA and its role in the Intelligence Community. I hope you will gain a better understanding of the Agency’s work, its unique capabilities, and, especially, its exceptional people.
John O. Brennan
