Message from the Acting Director: Nomination of John Brennan as DCIA

Statement by CIA Acting Director Michael Morell on the Nomination of John Brennan as DCIA

As you probably know, President Obama this afternoon nominated his Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Advisor, John Brennan, to serve as our next Director. I want to share with you how pleased and deeply proud I was to learn from the President yesterday that he would be nominating John, one of our own. I told the President that John was an outstanding choice, and that, with Senate confirmation, he will make a great Director.

John really knows our business. Over the course of 25 years at CIA, he worked across directorates, leading analysis in the DI, operations in the field, and all the elements that support them from the seventh floor.  He reached across agencies to form and lead NCTC, and then went on to further hone his leadership skills and broaden his perspective in the private sector. And, of course, for the last four years he has worked tirelessly with the President to keep our country safe and secure, working a huge homeland security portfolio that spans from defeating terrorists in foreign lands to coping with natural calamities here at home.

Those of you who know John can attest to his intellect, expertise, and prodigious work ethic. I have had the privilege of working with him for the better part of two decades, and I know him to be a public servant of the highest integrity. We have worked literally hundreds of tough issues together, and I have found that his approach always begins and ends with the question “What is the right thing to do here?”  John represents the best traditions of our Agency, and we are fortunate that he has been nominated as our next Director.

I very much look forward to welcoming John back to CIA. I know he will find here a workforce that has, in the years since he last wore a blue badge, grown even more talented, skillful, and capable of meeting today’s critical intelligence challenges.
