A Day in the Life of a CIA Logistics Officer

This is part of our series profiling Agency officers working in occupations not commonly associated with the Agency. We talk with them about their daily challenges and rewards, as well as some exceptional moments.

Officers in the CIA's Directorate of Support (DS) keep our key support functions—such as security, logistics, transportation, facilities, financial and medical services—up and running everywhere Agency officers serve. DS officers bring valuable attributes to their jobs—most notably initiative, adaptability, attention to detail, and a keen ability to work with a wide variety of officers worldwide to complete the mission. Many—including the logistics officer below—have come from the private sector and are able to translate those experiences and skills into operational logistics capabilities to meet CIA mission requirements.

Ann, Logistics Officer, three years with the CIA

"As a professional logistician at the CIA, I ensure CIA officers, who collect, analyze and report intelligence to US policymakers, can do their jobs effectively. Some of my duties include purchasing a wide variety of equipment used by CIA officers, coordinating shipments worldwide and managing stock and strategic supply items in support of the Agency's worldwide mission."

"Since the world is ever changing, my assignments can change dramatically within weeks, days or even minutes. Often times, the success of the mission depends on me—like all DS professionals—being flexible, agile and organized."

"I have traveled around the world to provide direct support to our officers. While overseas, I have contributed to a variety of mission requirements, such as managing finances, travel coordination and procurements."

"I applied to the CIA because I wanted to serve the public and felt I could make a contribution to the CIA's mission. What I found is an exciting job that takes me all over the world, keeps me on my toes, teaches me new skills and exposes me to different people, ideas and values. I truly believe that I have made a difference as a CIA logistics officer supporting our global mission."
