Message from the Director: 9/11
Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency David H. Petraeus on 9/11.
September 11, 2012
Today marks eleven years since al-Qa‘ida launched its infamous attacks against our country, murdering thousands of innocents and triggering a conflict unlike any other in our nation’s history. Few back then thought it would be possible to prevent another major attack on our country for as long as has been the case. The terrorists’ failure thus far has been the product of America’s unceasing vigilance, steadfast commitment, and extraordinary ingenuity, as well as the product of close partnerships with dedicated allies around the world. Looking back on how far our national effort has advanced, the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency should take great pride in our Agency’s contributions at critical junctures of this long campaign, one that has helped keep our fellow citizens safe and our enemies disrupted.
As successful as America has been in this fight, we must always remember that the threat persists and the challenge continues. In the coming year and beyond, I know our Agency will meet that challenge with the same strengths that served us so well in the past: relentless determination, superior knowledge, unrivaled tradecraft and technology, and absolute integrity. As we continue our mission, we will carry in our hearts the memory of our fallen colleagues and of all Americans who have perished from terrorist violence. Time cannot—and will not—diminish our devotion to this solemn cause.
Thank you for all that you have done in helping to achieve our national objectives in this critical endeavor.
David H. Petraeus
