Message from the Director: A Historic Act of Justice
Statement to the Workforce from D/CIA Brennan on the Third Anniversary of the Raid that Killed Usama Bin Ladin
May 1, 2014
Today marks three years since US Special Forces descended on a walled compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and killed Usama Bin Ladin. Bold, swift, and precise, it was an act of both courage and justice, at once making the world a safer place and demonstrating the invaluable role that intelligence plays in national security. It was also testament to the superior tradecraft, hard work, and fierce determination of an outstanding team of CIA officers, who spearheaded the decade-long effort with support from their partners in the Intelligence Community and the US military. We will always be proud of what they accomplished for America, the world, and the families of the countless victims of al-Qa‘ida’s violence—including our own officers.
At our annual Memorial Ceremony later this month, we will pay tribute to the men and women of CIA lost in the line of duty in the nearly seven decades since our Agency was founded. The best way we can honor their service and sacrifice is to approach our mission with the same ingenuity, skill, and dedication that led to the historic success in Abbottabad.
Thank you for helping to keep America safe and the CIA the extraordinary organization it has always been.
