Message from the Director: Memorial Day
Statement to the Workforce from D/CIA Brennan on Memorial Day
May 22, 2014
On Monday, Americans will join with friends and loved ones, raise flags, and place flowers on the gravestones of our fallen. Together, as one Nation, we will give thanks for our freedoms and for the devoted patriots who have secured them for us.
At CIA, we have long had a special bond with the military, with many of our officers having served in uniform themselves. CIA’s American Veterans Employee Resource Group (AVERG), which was founded a little more than a year ago, has strengthened that bond even further, helping advance our efforts to recruit more veterans and to take full advantage of their expertise once they are here.
Better than most, CIA officers understand the sacrifices made by our women and men in uniform. For years, we have served alongside them on the front lines. We have shared the hardships of warzone deployments, and—far too often—we have mourned the loss of colleagues serving selflessly to protect our Nation.
This week, we gathered to pay tribute to the 111 heroes honored on our Memorial Wall, including four members of our Agency family whose stars were added this spring. On Memorial Day, I ask that you pause to remember their service and sacrifice as well. Though we can never repay our debt to them, we can resolve to honor their service and to carry on the work to which they dedicated their lives.
For those of you who will be working on Monday, you have my sincere gratitude, especially if you are serving far from home. You and your loved ones will be in our thoughts. And may everyone have a safe and relaxing weekend.
