Message from the Director: The Passing of Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke
Statement by CIA Director Leon E. Panetta on the Passing of Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke
American diplomacy has lost one of its greatest practitioners. Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke tirelessly defended our nation’s interests while promoting peace and understanding across the globe. As CIA director and White House chief of staff, I worked closely with him on tough challenges from Bosnia to South Asia. Richard was a man of supreme intellect and talent whose instincts, insights, and leadership helped shape our country’s foreign policy for many decades. I am saddened by his passing, but I am confident of Richard Holbrooke’s enduring legacy.
In many ways, this loss marks the passing of the postwar generation of remarkable statesmen whose devotion to our nation’s values strengthened America’s leadership in the world.
The entire CIA family extends condolences to his beloved wife, Kati, to their children, and to all of Richard’s family and colleagues.
