Director's Statement: Memorial Day
Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Leon E. Panetta
on Memorial Day
May 26, 2011
As Americans, we are thankful for both our liberty and for the men and women willing to put their lives on the line to defend it. Their legacy is not only a safer, stronger America, but a better world. As recently as the raid in Abbottabad, history has shown that tyrants who threaten global peace and freedom must eventually face their natural enemies: America’s war fighters, and the silent warriors of our Intelligence Community.
We at CIA are deeply honored to serve alongside our partners in uniform wherever the mission requires, and we are very proud of the essential support we give them. As the President said of the Bin Ladin operation when he visited us last week, “the work you did and the quality of the intelligence that you provided made the critical difference—to me, to our team on those helicopters, to our nation.”
On this Memorial Day, we take particular pride in our mission to keep America safe. I hope as many of you as possible will enjoy the holiday at home or vacationing with your family. These simple pleasures are made possible by those who fought and died for our country—and by those who sacrifice at the front lines right now, for each of us. Our CIA family joins all Americans in paying tribute to the courage, commitment, and generosity of the patriots throughout our nation’s history who have served America—and the American dream of a better life for our children.
