Message from Acting Director Michael Morell

Statement to Employees by Acting Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Michael Morell

July 1, 2011

It’s never easy to say goodbye to a Director, especially one as talented and passionate as Director Panetta. Like all of you, I will miss him, but I look forward to continuing our close partnership in keeping this country safe. I am very grateful to have served as his Deputy Director and for all he taught me about managing this extraordinary organization and taking care of the extended Agency family.

It is a great honor to lead the men and women of CIA, if only in an acting capacity and for a short time. Our Agency’s work is central to every national security challenge facing the United States, and, in my three decades in intelligence, I have never seen as many foreign threats and opportunities—or as wide a variety—as we see today. That makes our work incredibly important to those we serve. We owe them nothing less than the best we can deliver in intelligence operations, analysis, technology, and support.

I have met several times with General Petraeus and it’s clear that he feels the same way. I look forward to his arrival, which, if all goes as planned, will be in early September. In the meantime, I am extremely fortunate to have Sue Bromley at my side. You can expect the two of us to continue the policies, initiatives, and priorities established during Director Panetta’s tenure.

Thanks to your hard work, our Agency has achieved tremendous success recently—from the historic Bin Ladin takedown to the excellent support provided to policymakers dealing with unrest in the Middle East and North Africa. My job, along with the rest of the senior leadership, is to ensure that you have the resources, tools, and training necessary to continue to succeed. For as long as I am Acting Director, I will focus on that responsibility. Nothing is more important to me than creating and maintaining the right conditions for you to excel.

As we approach the long Fourth of July weekend, I also want to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a happy, safe holiday. My sincere thanks go out to those who will be on duty. Your dedication to our mission and willingness to sacrifice for it demonstrate the patriotism we all feel as America celebrates its 235th birthday.

Happy Independence Day!

Michael Morell
