Message from the Director: A National Tragedy

Statement to Employees by Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Leon E. Panetta on the Shootings in Tucson, Arizona.

Saturday’s murder of six innocent Americans in Tucson, Arizona—and the wounding of fourteen others, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords—is both a human tragedy and an attack on the vital core of our democracy. On behalf of all of us at the CIA, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, our thoughts and prayers for those fighting for their lives, and our solidarity with all our fellow citizens in this sad time. America is never stronger than when its people come together as one to uphold and defend the great principles that define our republic.

Our Agency will join the nation in observing a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. If you can, please join us outside the main entrance for a brief ceremony, where our flag flies at half-staff in memory of the fallen.

Leon E. Panetta
