DCI Statement on the Death of Senator John Chafee

October 25, 1999

I am deeply saddened by the death of Senator John Chafee. For over 40 years, Senator Chafee served his nation as a model public servant--one who took stands based on strong conviction and principle and who voted his conscience. Whether in combat or in peace, he served to protect the security of our nation with exceptional honor and decency.

As a senior member of the Senate intelligence oversight committee, Senator Chafee had a major impact on our programs and policies. He consistently sought to strengthen our ability to protect vital U.S. interests, and always supported the men and women who risk much in the service of their nation.

Senator Chafee's passing is a great loss to me personally. I was privileged to have worked with the Senator for many years. He never hesitated to provide support, wise counsel and friendship no matter how rough the seas.

John Chafee produced a record of impressive accomplishment. But, more importantly, his life will stand as a beacon of dedication, grace and courage for all those who are devoted to serving our nation.
