Statement by George J. Tenet Director of Central Intelligence
March 2, 2000
Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson announced today that the President intends to nominate General John A. Gordon, USAF, to be Under Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration.
There is no one in the world better suited to lead this new organization than my friend and Deputy, John Gordon. The critical missions of enhancing U.S. national security through the military application of nuclear energy, promoting nuclear safety and nonproliferation, and supporting U.S. preeminence in science and technology require strong leadership and an extraordinary breadth of experience.
For the past three and a half years, first as Associate DCI for Military Support and since November 1997 as Deputy Director of Central Intelligence, John Gordon has provided me with wise counsel, skilled guidance, and warm friendship. Much of the progress made in the intelligence community over the past few years is the result of his vision and leadership.
I view the news that, pending Senate confirmation, John may leave the CIA with mixed emotions — sadness at the thought that he will no longer be at my side but also comfort in knowing that the NNSA's vital national security mission will be led by a true professional.
