DCI Statement on the Death of Representative Sisisky

Statement by Geoge J. Tenet Director of Central Intelligence on the Death of Representative Norman Sisisky

March 29, 2001

I am deeply saddened by Representative Norman Sisisky’s untimely passing. As a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Norm was a forceful and determined advocate for maintaining and strengthening our defense posture. He fully appreciated and supported the role of intelligence as a force multiplier. More importantly, he devoted considerable time and effort to understanding the work of the men and women of our Intelligence Community. In his travels at home and abroad, Norm took the time to talk and listen to those who operate on the front lines. He was not impressed by rank or position. He was moved by those who dedicate their lives to our mission and our Nation. With good humor and a sense of humility, Norm never took himself too seriously. Yet, he took very seriously his job of working to protect our national security.

All of us in the Intelligence Community have lost a stalwart and respected friend. The Congress and our Nation have lost a statesman of enormous dedication.

Our prayers are with Norm Sisisky’s family and colleagues.
