DCI Statement on the Death of Sir David Spedding

Statement by George J. Tenet, Director of Central Intelligence, on the Death of Sir David Spedding

June 13, 2001

It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Sir David Spedding. Sir David was a tremendous friend, colleague and mentor not only for me but for all the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency and the entire Intelligence Community.

One often hears of the “special relationship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. No one did more to ensure that that relationship was truly “special” between our nations’ intelligence communities than did Sir David.

As Chief of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, he deepened the partnership between our two countries, a partnership that has done so much to further the causes of freedom and justice around the world. Sir David was a magnificent partner; together our nations fought the scourges of terrorism, destabilizing regional conflict, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and international narcotics trafficking.

He was a top-notch professional who was a warm, wise and witty colleague. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, family and countless friends. We shall miss him greatly.
