New CIA Associate Deputy Director for Operations Named

Acting Director of Central Intelligence John E. McLaughlin has named Michael J. Sulick, a 23-year veteran of CIA, the Associate Deputy Director for Operations, the number two position in CIA’s clandestine service, effective immediately. Mr. Sulick had served as Associate Deputy Director for Operations for Counterintelligence (ADDO/CI) since May 2002.
Prior to becoming ADDO/CI, Sulick, 56, held a variety of operational and managerial assignments at Headquarters and overseas, including Eurasia, Latin America, and East Asia. He speaks Polish, Russian, and Spanish.
Sulick received his B.A. from Fordham University in Russian Language and Literature in 1971, an M.A. in Russian Language/Literature from Fordham in 1972, and a Doctorate in Comparative Literature from the City University of New York in 1977.
Sulick succeeds Stephen R. Kappes, who became the Agency’s Deputy Director for Operations (DDO) after James L. Pavitt retired earlier this week. (See the June 4th press release regarding Mr. Pavitt’s retirement.)
