I have received your response dated 11 June 2009 responding to the 5 February 2009
FOIA request submitted by the James Madison Project ("JMP") for all FOIA requests (and any
negative responses sent to the requesters) made to the Central Intelligence Agency ("CIA")
between 2003-2007 for articles published in the CIA in-house journal Studies in
Intelligence.
hi the above response, you redacted some of the information from the correspondence,
claiming vazious general exemptions (but not specifying which redactions were due to which
exemptions). We conditionally appeal this decision.
We aze only appealing some of the redactions, and may retract the appeal after we receive
further information. On the last page of certain documents, a large block of text, vazying from a
couple lines to several lines deep, is redacted with no explanation. Because we have been given
no clues as to the nature of the redacted information or the relevant exemptions, we cannot
formulate a solid argument to support this appeal, so at this point we ask that someone from the
CIA contact us with more information about these blocks of redacted text. If they turn out to be
unimportant, we will be happy to withdraw the appeal, but we do need to know more before we
can make any arguments.
