TO Chief, Security Research Staff
19 FROM :
SUBJECT: Sidetone Delay Equipment.

DATE: 19 August 1953
1. Upon receint of the above-named ecluioment, it was set up in
the Technical Brench laboratory. Here it was tested in every way
conceivable to make this equipment useful or adaotable to our needs.
2. The report by was studied and
conclusions made me agree that this equipment would not be useful
unless concealed ns part of some other testing apparatus and even
then its value was questioned.
3. The equipment is basically a Ma7necord Professional Re-
corder to which a tane storage and drive mechanism has been added.
Also added is a variable tape monitor lag which permits varying
the time of lag. This device was determined not too essential
(also in -:--report) since the Magnecord Recorder has a .2 second
delay built in.
The equipment was then dismantled end set un in Room 12 for
of for further study by his group. He advised
that some time would be required to oomplete his testing and
findings.
5. Finally, it is my opinion that report is com-
nlete end conclusive that the STD equipMent adds nothing to knoml
interrogation equipment or techniques.
