Dear Coordinator:
-0157z?7
I am a screenwriter who has been working closely with the C.I.A. for the past year. Currently
on exhibit inside C.I.A. headquarters at Langley is the Spy-Fi Exhibit, a display drawn from
my own archives of artifacts from spy movies and TV series. It is the largest such collection in
the world. Among the hundreds of pieces in my exhibit are original props, wardrobe and scripts
from the 1960s TV series, "The Man From U.N.C.L.E."
Toni Hiley, the C.I.A. Exhibit Center curator with whom I've worked closely this year, advised
me to contact you regarding a special request I wish to make.
I'd like to know if it is possible to acquire copies of past correspondance and other documents
from C.I.A. files that relate to "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." TV show. Toni said that this
may be possible through the Freedom of Information Act.
"The Man From U.N.C.L.E." series aired between September 1964 and January 1968. It was
reported in the nation's newspapers then that viewers of "U.N.C.L.E." believed the agency to
be real; consequently, many people flooded the United Nations and the F.B.I. with requests for
information on the organization, and how to join it. I suspect that viewers also wrote to the
C.I.A. I am currently researching this for work that I am doing related to my current exhibit at
the C.I.A., including books and scripts that I am developing.
Please let me know how I can proceed to get copies of such correspondance related to
"U.N.C.L.E.," both to and from the C.I.A., as well as any other documents that relate in any
way to this TV series. [I'd also like to know if a similar request could be made related to James
Bond and several other spy series. That would be of secondary interest.]
My Spy-Fi Exhibit--including some of the "U.N.C.L.E." artifacts on display--can be viewed
on the C.I.A. 's jcial website, www.cia.gov. I thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Danny Bieder
