SOVIET UNION
Soviet Third Long Range Air Army transports fly to Chukotsk area:
at least 12 transports of the Third Long
Range Air Army, believed to be based in
the southern part of the Maritime Military
District, departed for the Chukotsk area
on 12 June. the northward progress of
the operation from Magadan to Markovo on 18 June; on 19 June all
12 were engaged in shuttle flights between Markovo and Tanyurer.
Comment: The Soviet Union has been
steadily developing the military and economic potential of the Chukotsk
area since the war.
During April of this year an air shuttle
operation involving an unprecedented number of aircraft occurred
along this route with the apparent destination of Povarnya Krestik.
The present activity, and the earlier airlift, may be connected with
a unit move into the Chukotsk area or support of some unidentified
economic activity in the area. (See map on page 4)
