South Vietnamese infantrymen and rangers claim to have killed 456 Viet Cong guerrillas in the Mekong Delta province of Chuong Thien in a battle that began on 8 December and continued sporadically over the weekend. Seventy-three South Vietnamese died in the fighting and 136 were wounded. Sharp fighting was also reported near the Demilitarized Zone and in Quang Nam, Binh Dinh, and Binh Long provinces. The fighting in the delta, the second major action in this region in a week, involved five South Vietnamese battalions and elements of three Viet Cong battalions. A concentration of enemy troops of this size is a rare occurrence south of Saigon, where Viet Cong troops now usually operate in company-size formation, launch- ing only occasional battalion-size attacks. Action elsewhere in the country was highlighted by an unsuccessful enemy attack on a US 1st Division posi- tion near An Loc in Binh Long Province on 10 December which cost the Communists 124 dead. In the coastal plains south of Da Nang, weekend clashes resulted in over 100 enemy killed. US casualties in both areas were light. NS. NOTES 3.5(c) Denmark: Prime Minister Krag's minority So- cial Democratic government is threatened by a rift within the left-wing Socialist People's Party upon which it dependsfor support. The trouble, brewing for some time, flared into the open in connection with Krag's move to freeze an anticipated wage hike. The prime minister also faces problems with the right wing in his own party which is restive over Krag's cooperation with the Socialist left. The right wing is reported to believe that Krag's days are numbered, and that new elections will be called, re- sulting in further Social Democratic losses and the discrediting of Krag. 11 Dec 67 5 T-Q-P-8-ECIrrf Approved for Release: 2019/03/29 C03175066 3.5(c) Approved for Release: 2019/03/29 C03175066 -Aire Nuire Approved for Release: 2019/03/29 C03175066
