Rhee's police plan "special" 15 August demonstrations against NNSC: COMMENT South Korea has set a midnight dead- line on 13 August for the removal of the commission teams from South Korea. mobs may assault the commission com- pounds if the deadline is not observed. Although earlier plans called for differ- ent armed services to assault each of the five commission compounds in South Korea on Liberation Day, 15 August, the army and navy chiefs of staffs have indicated that they would not approve the use of force in such a venture. Police- inspired demonstrations by civilians appear likely to con- tinue, however. Pusan is particularly liable to new violence because of the presence there of a paramilitary force com- pletely loyal to RheeGeneral Won Yong-tok's Provost Mar- shal General Command. 10 Aug 55 CURRENT INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN Page 3 TOP SECRET Approved for Release: 2019/09/16 C03436121 Approved for Release: 2019/09/16 C03436121 _ _ _ SOUTHEAST ASIA 10 Aug 55 CURRENT INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN' Page 4 TOP SECRET Approved for Release: 2019/09/16 C03436121 Approved for Release: 2019/09/16 C03436121 NEAR EAST - AFRICA 3. Moroccan nationalists call for demonstrations on 20 August: Leaflets are being distributed by Moroccan nationalists in the native quarter of Casablanca calling for demonstrations on 20 August, the second anniversary of the dethronement of former sul- tan Mohamed ben Youssef, to be followed by a week of general strikes throughout Morocco. Meanwhile, the French settlers are consolidating their forces in an effort to have Resident General Grandval replaced. General Duval, army com- mander in Morocco. is being mentioned as his successor. COMMENT Widespread demonstrations on 20 August would probably result in con- siderable bloodshed--particularly if by that tinis Paris has not announced a policy for Morocco or replaced Grandval. Removal of the present sultan, Mohamed ben Arafa, the minimum demand of Moroccan nationalists, would on the other hand incite the French settlers to resort to violence. French premier Faure recently told American representatives in Paris that Grandval is his personal choice as resident general, and he intends to back him. 10 Aug 55 CURRENT INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN Page 5 Prinn connr7 Approved for Release: 2019/09/16 C03436121
