REFERENCES 2 May 1955 1 RD (b)(3) SOURCE EVALUATIONS ARE DEFINITIVE. APPRAISAL OF CONTENT IS TENTATIVE. SOURCE 1. Franz Josef Strauss, minister without portfolio, has recently informed the Chancellor that he will definitely tender his resignation unless he receives a regular cabinet post by 1 June 1955. 2. Strauss claims that Adenauer has promised him the chairmanship of the National Security Council, the establishment of which is being planned. Should the Chancellor fail to live up to this promise, Strauss intends to attract attention to the Chancellor's authoritarian politics and empty promises by resigning with considerable fanfare. Strauss has obtained the assurances of his Party that the chairmanship of the parliamentary defense committee will be restored to him if he leaves the cabinet. As chairman of the parliamentary committee, Strauss feels, he can do more constructive work than in his present post.
