The Situation in the Congo
While public demands by the Gizenga group have centered
around a vice premiership for Gizenga and a suitable propor-
tion of cabinet posts,
Gizenga is becoming more confident of his parliamentary
strength and that he will press vigorously for control of any new
central government. \
The American Consulate in Elisabethville believes that
Tshombe, intoxicated by independence day oratory and by the
flattery of Katanga's European community, has reached another
peak of intransigence. The consulate observes that Tshombe has
pressed his independent course for over a year against almost
universal opposition outside Katanga, and that he is unlikely to
abandon at this juncture instruments--such as his foreign advis-
ers--which he regards as having helped safeguard 1Catanga's sep-
aratism and economic prosperity),
