INDJA-PAKISTAN: Withdrawals From Border
(b)(1)
India and Pakistan have begun pulling back their forces from a
sector of their border in Kashmir.
According to the terms of an agreement
reached earlier this month, both sides have until the end of thp wppk
to complete their pullback from the border in Kashmir,
Comment: So far, the Indian withdrawal hasibedn limited, involving
only units normally stationed close to the border. Both sides are
likely to complete their withdrawals on time, however, laying the
groundwork for additional pullbacks in other areas to be worked out
in meetings later this month. The withdrawals should provide a
favorable atmosphere for President Zia's visit to India this weekend.
Military deployments will not return completely to normal, however,
until India finishes its Brass Tacks IV exercise next month
