Chilean officials are particularly distressed over the prospect of the US joining Cuba in co-sponsorship of a condemnatory UN resolution. Resurgence of the belief that US and world opinion will refuse to recognize and respond positively to any alleviatory measures taken by the present government short of its own self-Liquidation may have con- tributed to two recent regressive moves. These involved the internal exile of seven union Leaders and the denial of reentry to three Chilean women who had sought foreign assistance in locating missing relatives. A more definitive indicator of the mood in Santiago will be whether or not the government goes ahead with a decision reportedly made earlier this year to lift the state of siege on December 11. 6 - -SHRET" 3.5(c) Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 3.5(c) Shortly Shortly after the departure of Secretary of State Vance, the Argentine Foreign Ministry Press Secretary called in the USIS press officer to accuse correspondents Karen DeYoung of The Washington Post and Juan de Onis of The New York Times of attempting to disrupt US-Argentine relations. The Argentine official said that there was "concrete evidence" of links between Onis and leftist guerrillas. A Voice of America reporter and a BBC correspondent were detained for seven hours on November 24 after interviewing human rights demonstrators. They were not mistreated and were soon released. 7 - .5E6th-1- 3.5(c) Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628048 NR
