SUBJECT West German-Soviet Trade
Attached are the data you requested on West German-Soviet
trade. Note that the conversion to dollars is at current
exchange rates, which accounts for part of the drop in export
value in 1981. The data all come from German statistical
publications, and thus are unclassified, but you may be
interested in knowing that the energy import data is somewhat
hidden -- particularly the natural gas data. Oil product imports
are obtained from one publication and aggregated product by
product to arrive at the total shown in the table. Another
publication provides a figure for the total value of fuels,
lubricants and natural gas. The value for oil products is
subtracted from this figure to arrive at the number for natural
gas that appears in the table.
