All visible items of possible intelligence interest have been analysed and, where helpful, graphics have been supplied. Twenty-seven exposures including both ground and aerial photos made with a 35-mm camera were received for photo analy$is-. The most productive photos were on the Tbilisi/Orkhevi Airfield. Photo Analysis This new housing development 1/ includes approximately 500 one- story, family-type houses which have been built in a one-andzone-half- square-mile area Large plots of plowed land separate the rows of houses and indicate possible truck farming activity. Power lines, which are visible on the photography, provide homes with electricity. One large two-story institutional type building within a fenced area is probably the community spool. The road network serving the develop- meat appears to be unimproved. References 1. CI Tauz to Tbilisi, 2 Oct. 1957, p. 20. Photo Analysis This new installation, measuring approximately 1,000 feet square, has the following facilities under construction: three high, clear, parallel steel spans with probable craneways: two large and one small buildings; one large warehouse-type building. Rail spurs and good roads are being constructed to serve the installation. A new section of highway has been built just north of the railroad. Three power transmission lines extending in a north-south direction are located just east of the new installation, and an unidentified fenced storage installation, with four large warehouse buildings served by a road, is located just northwest of it. Approximately one and three-quarters miles father east there are 40 warehouse-type buildings of various sizes which extend south of the Tbilisi-Telavi railroad. Collateral information reports that an oil refinery has been built at this location, 1/ but a study of the photography indicates the probability that this is a storage facility. Positive identification is not possible, however, because of the photo- graphy lacks good contrast and -elear definition. References 1. Photo Analysis In this new housing development there are 16 apartment-type buildings, two of which are still under construction. The buildings appear to be three stories high. A construction crane is visible at the two new buildings under construction. Just east of the above apartments are another 10 probable two-story apartment buildings and approximately 20 single-story houses. One unidentified T-shaped building is located a few hundred yards west of the new area. A gravel-surfaced road serves the new development. Photo Analysis Tbilisi/Orkhevi Airfield 1/ is the main civil airfield for Tbilisi. A concrete runway, oriented north-northwest/ south-southeast, is approximately 7, 000 by 170 feet with limited extensibility in both directions. A concrete taxiway parallels the runway, with which it is :connected by three link-taxiways . Three large parking aprons are located northeast of the taxiway. One is in front of a probable terminal building under construction, another is in front of the old terminal building, and the third and largest is between the previous two. Navigational and electronic facilities include three groups of radio communication antennas. Two antenna masts are located just north of the terminal building, two are just west of the terminal building, and three are 100 yards west of the terminal building. There is one Fishnet, IFF radar, mounted on top of the main terminal tower. One Token, early-warning and GCI radar, is Z,000 feet northeast of the terminal building on top of an earth mound. 'Adjacent to the Token radar are five vans with support equipment. Four probable meteorological boxes and one wind cone are just southwest of the terminal building. Services include POL storage located 1,000 feet south of the Tbilisi- Telavi railroad line. This storage area is served by a concrete road TOP. One fuel truck is visible on a parking apron. Repair facilities are available for the maintenance of the aircraft. Fixed installations include a terminal building with control tower, one large hangar with a concrete apron east of the terminal building, and four small hangars northwest of the terminal building. Southeast of the main hangar is a probable reinforced-concrete terminal building under construction. One large crane is being used in the construction. Other facilities include eight barrack-type buildings and eleven supply- and =r, repair-type buildings. The airport is served by both road and rail. Aircraft include three Cabs and nine Crates on the parking apron, one Crate on the taxiway preparing to take off, two Crates parked on the grass west of the terminal building, one Cab in the large hangar, and three Mules and one liaison-type aircraft in the small-hangar area norhtwest of the terminal building. A concrete loop taxiway is located west of the runway. Two concrete crossover-taxiways connect the runway with a parking area which is located in the center of the loop taxiway. Fourteen possible aircraft are lined up on the parking ramp. However, the photo- graphy lacks clear definition which precludes identification of the aircraft. A concrete taxiway, which connects with Airframe Plant No 31, located northwest of the field, passes over a small bridge before connecting with the northwest edge of the airfield. One Cab aircraft is located on a hardstand in the center of the airfield, between the runway and parking ramp. Ground shots giving stereo coverage would help in the interpreta- tion of details. 2. It is extremely important that negatives should be handled with care; especially avoid touching the emulsion side of the film. Several finger prints on the film have blotted out detail. 3. Scratches on the film were possibly due to uncontrolled handling, to lint and dust on tightly wound film, to running film over rough surface, or to carless processing. 4. Additional coverage of Tbilisi/Soganlug Airfield and Airframe Plant No. 31 is suggested.
