KRUG SITES NEAR PODOLSK AND TBILISI, USSR
Two high-frequency direction-finding Krug sites have been identified
in the USSR. One is located in the Caucasus, near Rustavi, and the
other in the Central Russian Uplands, near Podolsk (see orientation
map).
The Krug site in the Caucasus is located at N410-25,., E45?08' ,
approximately seven nautical miles south-southeast of Rustavi and
immediately south-southeast of the village of Nazarlo (see map of
Tbilisi and vicinity). It lies between the electrified Tbilisi-Baku
railroad which passes nearly two miles to the northeast, and the
Kura River, nearly four miles to the southwest. The surrounding
terrain is relatively flat with few or no obstructions e Irrigation
ditches give this relatively flat terrain a checkerboard appearance
(see photographs),
The Krug site in the Central Russian Uplands is located at N55?-
28 ', E37?-22' , on an abandoned sod-surface airfield approximately
five nautical miles west-northwest of Podolsk and immediately north
of the village of Vlasyevo (see map of Podolsk vicinity and photographs
of the site).
These sites are circular in appearance. An outer circle, approxi-
mately 1,00' feet in diameter, consists of a low fence. A second smaller
concentric circle, approximately 800 feet in diameter, is unidentified.
Equally spaced around the circumference of a third concentric circle,
approximately 400 feet in diameter, is the antenna array consistin of
40 individual vertical antennas A
F^fiector curtain supported by approximately 38 equally-spaced stick
masts is just inside the antenna circle. Located at the center of the site
is a building with a mast projecting from the roof. Electronic receiving
equipment is probably housed here. A service road from outside the site
leads to the probable receiver building. Beside this service road, at a
point just inside the circumferential fence, is a small building which
probably functions as a gate house. Another small building with an
unknown function is located just inside the outer fence.
