EA 84-10070 March 1984 Approved For Release 2009/02/02 : CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 Approved For Release 2009/02/02 : CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 China: International Trade Annual Statistical Supplement The commodity data for China's world trade presented in this publication are estimated from the statistics of China's trade partners. The data are obtained by aggregating commodity data that have been categorized according to the United Nations' Standard International Trade Classifica- tion, Revised (SITC, Revision 1). The basic source of non-Communist trade partner data used in this report is the United Nations, Statistical Papers, Series D. Commodity Trade Statistics. Among Communist countries, only Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia report trade statistics to the United Nations. Data for the USSR and for most other East European countries are obtained from the official statistics of those countries. For countries that do not report official trade statistics, data are occasionally derived from trade agreements and other trade indicators. Commodity values at each level of the SITC are adjusted in order to make total exports and imports for each trade partner consistent with the totals presented in tables 2 and 3 of the quarterly trade paper. Thus, both Chinese exports and imports are presented on a free-on-board (f.o.b.) basis. In some cases the official trade partner statistics are adjusted for unrecorded trade where documentary evidence clearly indicates that the official statistics underreport actual levels of trade. Three different procedures are used to estimate commodity values for countries that lag in reporting data or for countries for which data are in- complete or nonexistent. First, for countries that report quantities but not values, the values are estimated by multiplying the quantity data by average prices for those commodities in China's trade with other countries. Second, for countries that have not reported commodity data in a given year, values for that year are extrapolated from the most recent year for which complete commodity data exist. Total values for missing years, obtained from the tables in the quarterly trade paper, are distributed proportionately over the commodities of the known base year. For 1982, more than 98 percent of China's total exports and 99 percent of total imports are obtained either directly from reported trade statistics or by this EA 84-10070 March 1984 Approved For Release 2009/02/02 : CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 Approved For Release 2009/02/02 : CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 extrapolation procedure.' Finally, for countries that have never reported commodity details in the period from 1970 to 1982, the small remainder is distributed proportionately over the commodity values obtained from the above procedures.' ' Footnotes in the following tables indicate shares of the totals obtained directly from reported commodity trade statistics. The data base currently contains commodity data, for 101 countries. 2 The residual, however, is not distributed over SITC categories 00 (Live Animals) and 331 (Crude Petroleum) for exports or over categories 04 (Cereals) and 7 (Machinery and Transport Equipment) for imports. Virtually all of China's trade in these commodities is conducted with countries for which commodity trade statistics are available. iv Approved For Release 2009/02/02 CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 Approved For Release 2009/02/02 : CIA-RDP04TOO367R000100600001-6 1970 1975 1978 1979 1980 1981 1982 ALL COMMODITIES b/ ................................... 2.163,125 7,120.634 10,169,520 13,458,490 18,874,962 21,495;795 23,501,229 O 1 Food and Live Animals ............................
