Just a few observations about the college.
From what we have learned, the girls seemed
to have fit right in and that question is now
history. Most of the fraternities are still
going strong and some have even pledged
girls. A number of our faculty came by
times, and all are looking very well.

His classmates will be sorry to learn that
Dave Good died about a year ago. Unfor-
tunately, this sad news only recently came to
our attention. Most of us will recall being
somewhat awed by the fact that Dave gradu-
ated summa cum laude (in mathematics),
the only member of our class, I believe, to
do so. His long career in one or another as-
pect of this field began, appropriately enough,
with teaching mathematics to wartime officer
candidates at Amherst. (See "In Memory.")
News was received recently that Bill
Whiteside, Bowdoin's Frank Munsey pro-
fessor of history was one of three faculty
members at our sister college to conduct an
educational program for Bowdoin's alumni
and their spouses on the topic, "Bowdoin
Men-As Shapers of Modern America."
Among the shapers, it turns out, was Frank-
lin Pierce, 14th President of the United
States.
Hank Delfiner's son is graduated from
Amherst in the Class of '77. One more de-
duction lost to Frank Houghton's IRS!
That's it on current news from the class
of '43's new "silent majority." Now, won't
you drop me a line?

tute Magazine Across the Board. The maga-
zine will carry its first advertising in Sep-
tember. Bill has more than twenty-five years
of experience in magazine advertising and
promotion. Following college and World War
II service as a naval officer, he joined Mod-
ern Industry as promotion and research di-
rector. He was called back to service during
the Korean engagement, upon returning to
civilian life, he became general manager of
Industrial Sports and Recreation. Subse-
quently he was with McCall's and Newsweek
and in January 1947 he established his own
Pittsburgh, with a new assignor in e
environmental area. His golf ga a de-
teriorated and he is now gettin trokes
from his wife. His daughter is rking in
Cambridge in the alumni relations office at
Lesley College.
Tom Greeman's house had a severe fire
and while the damage was extensive, he was
fortunate not to lose his house.
We are all saddened to learn about the
sudden death of Bob Beatty's wife, Barbara,
on May 5 in Darien, Conn. Barbara was a
great gal and a super "addition" to our
Class.
Amherst Board Chairman, George Shinn,
like many of us, is also in the tuition-paying
business-with one of his four daughters
attending Rhode Island's School of Design,
and others at Hampshire, Columbia gradu-
ate school, and the Institute of Fine Arts in
New York. Son Andrew at 15 is still at
home and presumably still only a room and
board liability for the time being.

William B. Cecil '45, an advertising
consultant, has been appointed
advertising sales director of the
Research Institute magazine, Across
the Board.
Bill Brown's daughter graduated from
Amherst this Spring magna cum laude.
Readers of this column may recall her trans-
ferring to Amherst after participating in our
30th reunion, her father's first return to
Amherst. With five other daughters, he
should have come back more often.
Doctor Selig Snow is also in the tuition
business. Eldest daughter Laurie has gradu-
ated in fine arts from Newcomb College
(Tulane) last year and is finishing with a
Master's in education at Lesley College in
Boston; second child, Matt, is at Amherst;
third child, Ilene is in Drama at Ithaca Col-
lege in New York and the number four
child, Julie is still at home and again pre-
sumably just a room and board liability.
Selig reports his wife "Boo" to be a fan-
tastic mother, wife, tennis player, cook and
travel companion. He himself is very busy
and happy in the practice of cardiology in
?
South Miami where he has been for the last

member of an English Dancing Morris
Team. He says "We have a new team here
called the "Westerly Morris Men & Mum-
mers". We wear white costumes with green
vests and black derbys; wear bells on our
legs and run around (supposedly in an or-
ganized manner) waving handkerchiefs or
knock sticks together (I have a couple of
large knuckles to prove it). It's good exer-
cise; we meet twice a week. My doctor
watched us dance a week or so ago and
said I guess I won't see you in intensive care
again! (And we'll look you over very carp,
fully next time we see you.)

Connecticut area, I suggest that you stop
and see Dr. Ben Gordon in the Emergency
Department of the Bridgeport Hospital. His
oldest daughter, Wendy, will receive her
Master's Degree in Geology from the Uni-
versity of Michigan next year, while the sec-
ond daughter, Marcy, has finished her Junior
Year at Swarthmore and has spent the sum-
mer working at Harvard Medical School.
His wife, Ellen, is also back in school get-
ting a Master's in counselling. Naturally,
Ben is strongly in favor of making tuition
tax deductible.
Ken Shrewsbury writes he is completing
his 30th year with the Ford Motor Company
and he is still enjoying being manager of
heavy truck field operations. His oldest son,
Douglas, has just graduated from Alma Col-

Mr. Randall -
The secretary to Mr. William C. Battle, President
of Fieldcrest Mills, called. Mr. Battle had
planned to attend the Dinner and had made ar-
rangements to visit briefly with Admiral Turner,

Mr. Battle had to cancel as he was having both

Dear Margaret,
It was nice to see you at the Conference Board dinner
and to have a chance to visit beforehand. I hope my comments
on family businesses were reasonably appropriate and accurate.
Enclosed is the one study I mentioned which we did not
bring with us--that on the world energy prospects. I'm also
enclosing a listing of publications which have been made
available to the public.
Further, the way in which you subscribe to all of our
unclassified publications should you desire to do so is to
write to Document Expediting (DOCEX) Project, Exchange and
Gift Division, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. 20540.
All good wishes.

Dear Stan:
I merely want to reiterate my very sincere congratulations
on the excellence of your presentation Monday evening at
the International Management and Development Institute
dinner. It was not only a personal pleasure to see you
again, but a real morale booster to see leadership of your
caliber in action and the confidence with which you are
addressing your heavy responsibilities. I am equally im-
pressed with your statement printed in today's (December 7)
Washington Post on the rights and responsibilities of .
C.I.A. employees as they handle classified material. It
is a fair and balanced policy which you have stated force-
fully and with great persuasiveness.
I'm sure that the tribulations of paring down your somewhat
top-heavy agency weigh heavily on your mind these days, but
you can count on the support of many grateful citizens for
the responsible and forthright way in which you are
proceeding.
With all best wishes, and I look forward to seeing you at
The Conference Board dinner on January 18 in New York, if
not beforehand.

Thanks so much for your nice note. I do
hope that we will have a chance to get together

much looking forward to that event. I have been

one just a year ago in Mallorca, Spain! They

Thanks again, and all the best.

It certainly was a pleasure to talk with you the other day and needless
to say we are very disappointed that you are unable to be with us at
Del Monte Lodge in September. I have taken the opportunity of enclosing
a preliminary list of our participants.
I, also, am enclosing a list of our "Regional Type" meetings scheduled
for the next twelve months here and abroad. We would again be delighted
to have you as our guest at any meeting you so wish. Of the domestic
meetings we like to suggest the Yama Conference beginning Friday evening
November 11th. This meeting is limited to our Trustees and elected
Members of the Corporation and the attendees are usually from all
corners of the nation.
The other matter we discussed and I would like at this point of time
''sign you up" as our speaker for our informal and off-the-record Members
Dinner which is scheduled to be held Wednesday evening, January 18, 1978
here in New York City at The Waldorf-Astoria. In the past these meetings
are usually attended from 125 to 150 Chief Executives and their guests.
We ask the principal speaker to have a few opening remarks and be avail-
able to answer questions. The opening evening activities start with a
cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m. and, traditionally, adjournment is no later than
9:00 P.M.
Kay Randall joins me in expressing onr hope you will be able to do this and
we look forward to hearing from you.

SUBJECT: Telephone Call from William Wallace of the Calvin Bullock Forum,
N.Y.C. (212) 269-8800
Mr. Wallace called this afternoon to ask for a speech title
for Admiral Turner's presentation to them on Wednesday, 18 January. He
said it should be relatively short in length and general in scope. The
reason for these specifics is that they use the title in their engraved
invitations--i.e., in the event he changes the thrust of the speech somewhat
it should still fit the title (and not ruin the engraved invitation!).
He needs this asap and hopes to have it sometime on Friday or before. If
he has not received it on Friday, he will call on Monday, when he will be in
Washington for a couple of days.
Along with the title of the speech, he asked for a bio sketch
("the best you have") of ADM Turner, and a press photograph of him. Regarding ey,~
the bio, he'd like one with a little color -- he mentioned that military ones
often include a long list of commands, etc. without any specifics. He mentioned Ill
that TIME magazine does good profiles of appointees, etc. They'd like something MO
along those lines.

Again you were terrific, as you also
were at the Economic Club affair.
On my card at Bullocks, I asked whether
you would be interested in speaking to the
Beta Gamma Sigma group (comparable to Phi
Beta Kappa) some evening in June. I tenta-
tively reserved the New York University Club
for June 6, 7 or 13.
As a topic, my suggestion would be
"New Directions in Intelligence", with
comments on the oil situation in U.S.S.R.
and its economy.
This will be the most important meeting
of the year, with the Deans of several
universities being our guests.
...Sincerely yours.,.

Dear Len,
Certainly enjoyed seeing you again, even if
briefly. You are a two-time loser, having
endured the Economic Club also.
I'm flattered by your invitation to give
two more talks. I would certainly like to be able
to do it. I have to say, in all candor, that I
think I must decline for several reasons. To begin
with, I've made three trips to New York for speak-
ing engagements in my first ten months in office.
I really feel I must spread myself into other
territory despite the concentration of very important
and attractive audiences in New York. Beyond that,
I've booked all that I possibly can do between now
and the summer in the way of speaking. There just
isn't enough time to keep up with the work and be
on the road very much at all.
I do appreciate your suggestions and will hope
that in another year or so things may loosen up.
Again, many thanks and warmest wishes.
Yours,
Mr. N. Leonard Jarvis

Dear Mr. Bullock,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and
complimentary telegram. I am flattered that you
would do this, particularly when I was really
the benefactor from being with you and your
stimulating group. The questions and the
exchanges before and after were most helpful
to me.
Beyond that, may I thank you for the unique
replica of Nelson's sword. I shall treasure it
as a reminder of a delightful afternoon.

Thanks so much for your kind invitation to
address the Calvin Bullock Forum. I would like
very much to address your distinguished-group
and understand my staff has been in touch, with
the result that the 18th of January will perhaps
be a mutually acceptable date. However, I would
prefer not to make a firm commitment until this
fall. My staff will continue to be in touch.

L1:~
Once or twice a month a remarkably prominent group of
business men gathers at One Wall Street to hear a speaker
discuss some matter of major interest to the business world.
Such meetings are held in mid-week and begin at four
o'.clock sharp. The talk lasts half an hour and is followed
by a quarter hour question period.
Everything said is off the record, which permits un-
usually candid addresses and discussions.
A partial list of past speakers is enclosed. Their
eminence and the character of the audience have given this
institution an international reputation.
Do you think you could come up to New York and honor
our forum on one of these dates later in the year:
December 1st, December 5th or December 14th?
We sincerely hope you can accept. We promise.a most
distinguished audience.
