Dear Mr. Justice,
Thanks so much for your kind letter of
congratulations on my Commencement address at
Bryant College. I was pleased to have the
opportunity to convey this message. I under-
stand the length of my talk was well received
by the students and I certainly hope that the
content was too.
Pat and I thoroughly enjoyed our short
stay at Bryant and the opportunity to meet
you.
Thanks too for your warm wishes on my new
assignment. I appreciate your support because
the challenge ahead truly is great.
Again, many thanks and all the best.
Yours sincerely----?,
STANSFIELD TURNER

Admiral Stansfield Turner, Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C. 20505
Dear Admiral Turner:
Unfortunately, I did not have an opportunity
to express my congratulations to you after you delivered
your splendid Commencement address at Bryant College.
I felt that you struck a most appropriate note in urging
involvement on the part of the graduating seniors in
government, either professionally or as interested
volunteers.
There has been such a tendency in recent
years for young people to look with disdain upon al-
most all government activities, particularly the mili-
tary and the intelligence branches. Obviously, no
nation has a viable option to.forego significant acti-
vity in national defense, which must include strong
military forces adequately informed by competent intel-
ligence personnel.
In the fullest sense, all of our liberties
depend upon our willingness to protect our national
freedom and integrity. Freedom is not a self-executing
concept. Unless our young people are willing to parti-
cipate in the vital job of preserving this nation, we
shall obviously pass into the decline which has char-
acterized other great nations and empires, whose his-
tories we have known.
It was indeed a great pleasure to have the
opportunity to meet you and your wife at Bryant College.
