Admiral Stansfield Turner, U. S.N.

In early January I had the opportunity to submit your name as
a worthy candidate for an honorary degree from Salve Regina College.
I have served as a Trustee at Salve Regina for eight years, and
nothing has given me more pleasure than to be instrumental in
suggesting your name as a_possible recipient of an honorary degree
at this year's Commencement on Sunday, May 22, 1977.
The Honorary Degree Committee met in January and prepared
their recommendation for the Executive Committee of the Board of
Trustees. This week this group met and approved the recommenda-
tion of the Committee.
It is significant, I think, that I should be writing this letter
to you on the very day you are being confirmed as the Director of
the Central Intelligence Agency. May I just say parenthetically,
your contributions to our country in your long Naval career are
well known and deeply appreciated here in Newport. Your most
recent honor and responsibility as President Carter's choice for
Director of the Central Intelligence Agency strengthens and con-
firms our appreciation of you as a dedicated public servant, out-
standing Naval officer and for me, personally, a respected friend.

It will give me great personal pleasure to have Salve Regina
College award you this well deserved honorary degree at its
twenty-seventh Commencement on Sunday, May 22, 1977.
I look forward to your favorable response. My personal best
wishes to you in your new position. The C. I. A. is in good hands,
and your service to your country will continue in the spirit of
excellence which has so characterized everything you do.
Best wishes to Pat. She has every reason to be happy and
proud of the government's recognition of the great man she married.
Sincerely,
T
P. S. I sent President Jimmy a Providence Journal Editorial
concerning yourself and congratulated him on his fine selection.

Dear George,
Many thanks for your letter of congratulations
on my new assignment. I am really grateful for the
honor, humble at the immensity of the. task, and
appreciative of your good wishes.
Thank you also for your kindness in nominating
me for the honorary degree from Salve Regina College.
Sister McKillop called my office a week or so ago
to inform me. I have accepted and set aside May-22nd.
I am truly honored and look forward to seeing you
and Betty there. Once more I am in your debt and
I am grateful.
In the meantime, all the best.
