Approved For Release 2009/04/15: CIA-RDP05SO062OR000501190048-4 --" NAVY LEAGUE OF THE UNITED STATES 1. GEORGE SCHAFFER, D. D. S. NATIONAL DIRECTOR NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, AWARDS COMMITTEE 40 RED CROSS AVENUE NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND 02840 Admiral Stansfield Turner, U. S.N. Commander In Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe Naples, Italy P. 0. Box 132 F. P. O. New York 09524 In early January I had the opportunity to submit your name as a worthy candidate for an honorary degree from Salve Regina College. I have served as a Trustee at Salve Regina for eight years, and nothing has given me more pleasure than to be instrumental in suggesting your name as a_possible recipient of an honorary degree at this year's Commencement on Sunday, May 22, 1977. The Honorary Degree Committee met in January and prepared their recommendation for the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. This week this group met and approved the recommenda- tion of the Committee. It is significant, I think, that I should be writing this letter to you on the very day you are being confirmed as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. May I just say parenthetically, your contributions to our country in your long Naval career are well known and deeply appreciated here in Newport. Your most recent honor and responsibility as President Carter's choice for Director of the Central Intelligence Agency strengthens and con- firms our appreciation of you as a dedicated public servant, out- standing Naval officer and for me, personally, a respected friend.
