? 10 April 1978 STAT STAT Dear Mr. Baratz: I appreciate your prompt response to my verbal undertaking to participate in the panel discussion on the intelligence agencies and the academic community in New Haven on 10 June 1978. Thank you for the invitation to lunch with Professor Peter Steiner, which I am pleased to accept, though with the following proviso. In my reply to the informal invitation from your office I said that there was a roughly twenty percent chance that I might not be able to meet the engagement. I have also ascertained that Mr. Anthony Lapham, our General Counsel, who was designated by Mr. Knight of your office as the replacement you would prefer, will be unable to serve. I regret having to say so, but I really do believe that if I should not be available at the time it is better that the Intelligence Community not be represented on your panel. Having been concerned with the scheduling of such events myself, I appreciate the awkward position me and resign yourself to an all-academic discussion it. Perhaps it would be better for you to withdraw i-h3 invitatinn to . this leaves you in. I am afraid, however, that I cannot'improve upon stand and remain grateful ~'~ tiegi5lr The Director of Central Intelligence Washington. D. C. 20505 '~ /,//, If that should be your choice shall under- to you for the invitation. Sincerely, STANSFIELD TURNER Mr. Morton S.
