ACADEMIC SECTION
FBI National Academy (NA) Program
Program Description, Mission, and Curriculum
The FBI National Academy Program was established
in 1935 and is an eleven-week, college-level education and training
program conducted at the FBI Academy for municipal, county, and
state law enforcement personnel, with a limited number of spaces
allocated in each class for Federal and foreign officers. Four 250-
officer National Academy Sessions are conducted annually.
The course of instruction is designed for experienced
police administrators and command personnel with the broad mission
of raising the standards and performance of law enforcement by im-
proving the knowledge and capabilities of police personnel.
Throughout this training, particular emphasis is
placed on leadership development. The National Academy's instruc-
tional staff is primarily composed of experienced FBI Special Agents
holding graduate degrees. These highly qualified instructors bring
to the classroom advanced knowledge and expertise from a practical
law enforcement perspective. To further enrich the National Academy
program, lecturers from educational institutions, together with out-
standing speakers and experts from the criminal justice and related
fields, are used extensively.
Each candidate for NA training must be nominated by
the head of his agency and must meet certain broad selection criteria
such as age, law enforcement experience, education, physical fitness,
and general reputation among his peers.
There is no charge to any NA student or his department
for this training. Additionally, the FBI provides meals, lodging, dry
cleaning and laundry services while at the Academy and the only cost
to the student is for personal items such as tobacco, sundries, etc.
Transportation expenses of Federal and foreign officers are paid by
their respective agencies.
