Approved For Release 2009/06/08: CIA-RDP05S00620R000601550004-1 I NATIONAL ACADEMY UNIT ACADEMIC SECTION FBI National Academy (NA) Program Program Description, Mission, and Curriculum The FBI National Academy Program was established in 1935 and is an eleven-week, college-level education and training program conducted at the FBI Academy for municipal, county, and state law enforcement personnel, with a limited number of spaces allocated in each class for Federal and foreign officers. Four 250- officer National Academy Sessions are conducted annually. The course of instruction is designed for experienced police administrators and command personnel with the broad mission of raising the standards and performance of law enforcement by im- proving the knowledge and capabilities of police personnel. Throughout this training, particular emphasis is placed on leadership development. The National Academy's instruc- tional staff is primarily composed of experienced FBI Special Agents holding graduate degrees. These highly qualified instructors bring to the classroom advanced knowledge and expertise from a practical law enforcement perspective. To further enrich the National Academy program, lecturers from educational institutions, together with out- standing speakers and experts from the criminal justice and related fields, are used extensively. Each candidate for NA training must be nominated by the head of his agency and must meet certain broad selection criteria such as age, law enforcement experience, education, physical fitness, and general reputation among his peers. There is no charge to any NA student or his department for this training. Additionally, the FBI provides meals, lodging, dry cleaning and laundry services while at the Academy and the only cost to the student is for personal items such as tobacco, sundries, etc. Transportation expenses of Federal and foreign officers are paid by their respective agencies. A copy of the National Academy curriculum is included in the appendix to this report. Through an affiliation with the University of Virginia, National Academy students are able to earn up to 16 college credits or nine graduate credits for the academic portion of the curriculum, which includes a number of elective courses. A wide range of voca- tional subjects further complements the program.
