Admiral Stansfield Turner, USN (RET)

Washington, D. C. 20505
The date for commissioning of John Hancock (DD 981) is rapidly
approaching. The ship is making remarkable progress and has
performed well at sea during Builder's Trials on 15-16 December,
a mini-trial on 8 January, and most recently the acceptance
trial on 15-16 January. I think you will see a vast difference
since your last visit to the ship.
The night before commissioning the ships officers and I will
host a reception at Longfellow,House in Pascagoula. We would
be especially honored if Mrs. Turner and you could join us at
1900. Of course a formal invitation will follow later; how-
ever, I did want to extend this personal invitation, recogniz-
ing the need for advance warning in your busy schedule.
I will keep you advised of our progress and send you a Commis-
sioning Program as soon as they come off the press.
Sincerely,
LO--{ . R. C.. WLJENBUSCH
