SECURITY rim NATION NO., 50X1 SUBJECT : Information on Boundary between Honduras pnd El Salvador TO TEGUCIGALPA The Embassy is requested to provide the Department's Special Assistant for Maps with information that is available regarding the status of segments of the Honduras - El Salvador boundary, shown in red on the enclosed map entitled "Latin America; Status of Boundaries". At the time of compilation of this map (1946), the boundary was considered to comprise segments respectively designated as "demarcated," "delimited" 4 and, for a short distance, "disputed." The Department's information regarding this boundary is not adequate. It is desired particularly that information be received that will define the current status of each segment of the boundary. It will be appreciated if the Embassy finds it feasible to obtain a statement from an appropriate Honduran Government agency giving that agency's interpretation of the present status of each segment. The ComisiOn de Geograffa would be a possible source of such a state- ment and of information on existing demarcation maps. Copies of any recent documents that concern the boundary, especially any official publications, would be of considerable value. If the EMbassy wishes to portray graphically any information it has for forwarding to the Department, the enclosed map entitled "" "Honduras", 1;2,000,000, may be used. An instruction is being sent to the Embassy at San Salvador requesting that information on this boundary be obtained also from the Salvadoran Government. The Honduras-Nicaragua boundary being in dispute, the needs of the Department's Special Assistant for Maps for information on this boundary will presumably be satisfied by the despatches that are prepared by the Embalm,' from time to time when there are new developments to report.
