Acts to Delete Associated Press Opening a perjury trial yesterday against an official of the International Telephone & Telegraph. Corp., federal prosecutors acted to steer clear of areas involving certain contacts with the Central Intelligence Agency and a high Chilean government official. Robert Berrellez is one of two ITT employes who have been charged with do a Senate Fa, eiga Relation:; subcommittee during its 1973 probe into alleged involvement in Chile's 1970 presidential election by ITT and the CIA. As the trial opened, U.S. District Court Judge Aubrey Robinson granted federal prosecutors permis- sion to delete from the formal charges references to separate meetings be- tween ITT official Harold V. Hendrix, a CIA official and former, Chilean newspaper executive Hernan Cubillos. Hendrix -is an unindicted coconspi- rator in the Berrellez 'case. Cubillos is now Chile's foreign minister. A jury was quickly selected to try Berrellez, who in 1970 was ai. I.T public relations official in South America. The charges against him are similar to those to which former CIA director Richard Helms was allowed to plead no contest a year ago. Helms. Berrellez and Edward J. Ger- Tri . rity, another ITT official. were ac- cused of lying under oath when they testified they did not know that ITT, fearing the expropriation of its prop-. erties in Chile, had aided political foes of Salvador Allende, a Marxist who was assassinated in a coup after his election as Chile's president. Helms was fined $2,000 and given a suspended two-year jail term. Justice Departmcn` officials said a mitigating factor was his oath not to reveal Intel- ligence sources or methods. Gerrity will be tried later. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/17: CIA-RDP09T00207R001000030082-2
