On the night of 16/17 July "the Western forces", after the delivery of atomic strikes, crossed the state frontier on a front Dargun, Malchin, Rechlin, Neustadt, Rathenow and by 3.30 had advanced in different directions up to 8-10 kas. 2. "The Eastern forces", having received information in the beginning of July about the preparation of the Western forces" for military action, began to deploy their troops with the objects of repelling the enemy strike and of subsequently destroying their forces, in rgadiness to go over to the offensive by the end of 19 July (k iskhody 19.7). On the night of 16/17 July "the Eastern forces" delivered a counter- strike with aircraft and artillery by which the force of the "Western" initial strike was significantly weakened. The- let Independent Engineer Battalion has come under the command of the 2nd Western Front and after unloading at "Iozy" Railway Station by 3.30 on 17 July has concentrated in the woods east of Dobrzany. The battalion is provided with personnel and equipment in accordance with what is available, and has four 8461 missiles with nose cones (golovnaya chast') and two 8111 misiiles. At 3.30 on 17 July a senior officer of Artillery Headquarters, 3rd Army, arrived at the headquarters of the lit Battalion, and gave the battalion coamauder the following information on the situation and task: 1) On the night of 16/17 July the enemy commenced military operations and at 3.00 on 17 July, overcoming the resistance of covering units advanced in an easterly direction for 10 km;. From the beginning of military operations the enemy has been using atomic weapons and combat radioactive substances (boyevoye radioaktivnoye veshchestvo). 2) The 3rd Army troops have the task of halting the advance of"the Western forces", of inflict- ing defeat on the enemy striking group, of going over to the offensive without delay, of carrying the military operations over to the territory of "the Western forces", and of completing their destruction there. The preparation of the special charges and assembly of the nose cones of 8111 missiles for the battalion devolves on the Mobile Repair-Technical Base (PRTB). 3. For carrying out the tasks during the course of the operation, ten 8111 missiles and sixty 8A61 missiles are issued to the battalion from the morning of 18 July to 23 July, and also special fuel for 76 missiles. The PETS is deployed in the woods 5 kms southwest of Torgelow and is ready for checking and assembly of special charges and nose cones for the 8E11 missiles. 2. A catalogue of points of the state geodetic network in the siting areas allotted to the battalion, is sent to the battalion headquarters with the group commander of the let Section of the 8th Geodetic Detachment.
