SUBJECT: Progress Report for-Week of 13 April through 17 April 1953
1. A combined total of 193 students is presently enrolled in
introductory and self-study courses in the Language Training
Division.
2, The language laboratory was used for a total of 176 hours
during the past week, including 25 hours put in at the in-
stallation in "M" Building.
3. Eight requests for non-CIA language training have been given
final -approval and eight have been recommended for approval.
ha Before a group of representatives of several divisions con-
cerned, assembled in Mr. James Reber's office, a report was
made on the present status of electro-mechanical translation.
The present proposal, which is before the A.C. of S. G-2 for
action, is to support a 15-month linguistic-engineering re-
search program without the development of equipment as this
would appear premature. Provision is also made fortpractica~lt

tests on existing equipment. Indications are that a p
as now formulated is likely to be approved and that the Agency
may become co-sponsor with the Department of Defense.
Chief, Language Training Division, called on the former Direc-
tor of Central Intelligence Agency, concerning the future
prospects of the language and area program at Foreign Service
Institute, Department of State. Inquiries are being made and
an answer is expected at an early date.
