A combined total of 190 students is presently enrolled in introductory and self-study courses in the Language Training Center. 2. The language laboratory was used for a total of 515 hours during the past week. srx F requests for non-CIA language training have been processed. F have been recommended for approval and one has been re- commended for disapproval. Study of the aspects of mechanical translation has been continued through conferences with IBM engineers, representatives of Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology, University of Washington, Catho- lic University, G-2 of the Department of the Arty and consulta- tions with research staffs in several government agencies. A pro- gress report will be submitted on 15 April 1953 which will contain a proposal for a concrete research project. Two special Russian reading classes began at the Georgetown Uni- versity Institute of Languages and Linguistics on 7 April 1953, each comprised of five students. One is Group 26 of SRA. (Special Reading Basic) and the other is Group 6 of SRS-IT (Special Reading- Scientific$ Advanced). Arrangements have been made to train members of the ORR staff who know Russian to give short reading orientation courses to large groups of students on the premises of ORR. ~:. }J 7. Members of the staff of LSD will attend the Fourth Annual Round Table Meeting on Linguistics and Language Teaching to be held at the Institute of Languages and Linguistics on 10-11 April 1953. cc: Plans and Policy Staff CONFIDENTIAL 8.
