Attention is ca. led to a bill (H.R. 5911) to establish an
office of Naval Research. This bill serves to provide within
the Navy Department a single office to obtains coordinate and
make available to the Navy scientific information as well as
for conducting specialized and imaginative scientific research
for the maintenance of future naval power and tine preservation
of national security. A naval research advisory committee of
preeminent scientifictreaearch personnel is also established
to consult with and advise the Chief of the Office of Naval Re-
search.
The purpose of this bill is to legalize the research depart-
ment of the Navy which now exists under 4moutive Order. The
new Naval Research office will also cooperate with the Department
of Research whi:h was set up by the Congress recently.
H.R. 5911 passed the House on 20 Lay 19460 and passed the
Senate on 17 July 1916. However, it will be necessary to refer
the bill back to the House for approval of certain minor amend-
ments added by the Senate.
