Memorandum for the Record
Subject: Conversation With Cong. McCormack
I talked with Cong. McCormack this morning and told him
that a group of freshman Republican Congressmen had approached
us with a request for a briefing on CIA and that we were acceding
to that request this week. However, I said if there were a similar
group of freshman Democratic Congressmen we would be very
happy to extend an invitation to them for a similar briefing.
Mr. McCormack immediately asked whether we would include
Gong. Robert Condon (D., Calif.) in the Democratic group or would
find it necessary to bar him. I stated that we would undoubtedly
find it necessary to exclude Mr. Condon from any briefing in view
of the security problems involved. Mr. McCormack did not disagree
with our position in this regard, and in fact expected it as the FBI
had alerted him and Speaker Rayburn regarding Cong. Condon in
connection with the latter's Committee assignments.
In view of the present political situation in the California
primary in which Mr. Condon is involved. as well as Democratic
National Committee Chairman Mitchell's recent blast at him, Mr.
McCormack thought it might be beat if we did not invite any of the
freshman Democrats at this time so as not to highlight another
security turn-down or embarrass ourselves. He recommended that
if any freshman Democrats should approach as for a briefing for the
group that we inquire as to whether they have discussed it with the
Democratic leadership.
